SISD provided an opportunity to learn the steps that students should take to apply for Sheldon Early College High School, the KHS nursing program, Dual Credit Technical courses or the Modified Early College Academy.

good evening and welcome to dual-credit night you are in the right place at the right time we have some amazing programs to share with you tonight especially for parents an 8th graders who about to make some very exciting choices for their years in high school I'm Karen Gallo I'm the executive director of advanced academics and Sheldon ISD and I'll be introducing to you tonight our district personnel and KHS Personnel who will be helping your students through this exciting time in their High School careers will be sharing with you information about Sheldon Early College High School King nurses in training modified Early College College Academy which is also known as Mecca the technical dual credit program and the Sheldon ISD T STEM Academy so the roads college credit how do you earn college credit while you're in high school will first of all let me start by sharing with you a quote from Robert F Kennedy the future is not a gift it's a Natty we have so many opportunities to offer my students but it's not necessarily a given that they will be able to complete these opportunity without putting in the hard work time and dedication to reach their achievement and their academic goals we're going to start with our very first program after we discuss what is dual credit do dual credit is when you take one class a college course they for example senior Inc okay so your college course will count for your senior English High School Credit and you're also building a college transcript with our College Park San Jacinto College means it means to take one course and earn credit for high school and for college so we'll begin with Miss Annette Clark the dean of Sheldon early which High School how do you say good evening parents and students if you're with us tonight I'm excited to be able to share with you information about Sheldon Early College High School Sochi Early College High School is a small learning community a school-within-a-school model we are located on c e King High School campus but we are upstairs in the third floor we have our own area accelerated program that is a preparation for success in college so the goal of the Early College High School is for your student to be able to earn their high school diploma while at the same time potentially earning an associate degree which is up to 60 hours at no cost to the family and again like Miss Gallo mentioned our partner and higher education is San Jacinto College and I'm mostly the north campus go through our presentation feel free to use the Q&A section not the chat but the Q&A section and as we go through our program tonight will be answering some of those questions for you and then we'll pick up at the end with all of the questions we have an address so far I so just a little bit of information about why you may consider choosing Early College High School and if it's right for your student Early College High School graduate students of college ready 15% more than the state average you can also see on the slide information like uchs students are 16% more likely to attend college than the average high school student they persist in college at 21% higher rate than State average and that means but Piper says that means they stay in college at a 21% higher rate and an early college high school graduate is likely to make $250,000 more over their lifetime than a high school student so in an accelerated program it's important that our students have a lot of support to be able to be successful in this environment where they are in advanced high school student but also a college student the same time and so some of the layers of support that we have in place include Avid Avid has been an elective course which a student in Early College High School would take all four years and of course where students get a lot of support when it comes to love how to be good students how to take good notes how to study lots of career preparation lots of college investigations does a lot of things take place and this class that prepare students to be successful in college and in careers we provide a Summer Bridge Camp for our incoming 9th grade students to get them acclimated to the program we hold Saturday Saturday schools in after-school tutorials on a reggae we continuously encourage college visits and speakers so that our students have lots of exposure and experiences to make the best choices for them for their future and we also offer several leadership opportunities community service pieces as a part of the program so if your student is an early college high school student what does it look like for the four years that they would be with us in Early College High School all 9th and 10th graders will be high school students here on the campus they don't leave or they don't leave to go to San Jacinto College but they take two college courses per year one each semester and are located here on the campus the professors come to us your student would also be enrolled in pre-ap and in some cases AP High School courses 11th and 12th graders your students have the Opera you need to take up to for college classes per semester pending college readiness and so that means they could be a full time college student while at the same time completing their High School requirements and again as a an upper class are the classes that they keep at the high school that they may be pre-ap or AP High School courses as well and those AP stands for advanced placement where they could still earn college credit at the completion of that course high school offers for excuse me 8 degree plans in partnership with San Jacinto College and those can be found on our website and some of those include things like pre-made or criminal justice associate Korean business or even a teaching concentration and so you can see more about our plans on our website okay so when you're thinking about is Early College High School is right for your please consider that once again it's an advanced accelerated environment but all students are encouraged to apply because we provide several layers of support to build students up to being successful at that level so if you're in Early College High student the student should be willing to develop and maintain a strong work ethic and have a strong determination to succeed sometimes it will be challenging sometimes we make a time when you know the classes are class load may be heavy or they may experience a challenge for the first time and successful students have the ability to be determined in persevering through that and for asking for assistance if they need help I'm at we we help teach our students how to do all of these things students in Early College High School must also be willing to devote time to community service at in the Summer Bridge Camp and commit to attending for for years that they're here with us once a student get started in the program we want for them to continue in the program because they are on an accelerated path to success I a big question that we always honest as can I still participate in extracurricular activities if I'm a nice ages student and the answer is yes we have students that participate in athletics band pantherettes all types of activities here on the high school however academics are always going to be priority number one as an early college high school student and I will tell you that tough decisions sometimes have to be made particularly in your junior year when we start looking at building those College there may come a time when decisions have to be made but of course that's on an individual basis so how do I apply our application will be digital this year we're going to post it to her Early College High School website if you're not familiar with where that is you would go to the c e King High School website and under academies you'll find he's DHS and that's where you'll locate our application are suppose that the middle schools will also be posting application to their websites for Access as well there is an essay components and I want to encourage you to just fill out the application to work with your student as they fill out the application should be done in Partnership I'm because there are pieces in that application as a parent that we would want for you to see and for you to know and agree to as well and so the essay component is important applications will be available online beginning our goal is for it to be posted by tomorrow and incomplete applications will not be accepted and the due date for applications is February 5th so we'll have a two-week window for those application to be available kite how are students selected so once we receive all of our application students are selected by a lottery system that means that it is randomize that means we don't select students based on grades or test scores we select students it's called a performance blind Lottery and so Sheldon Early College High School will follow the guidelines of the t e a blueprint. veterans are our actions and support students who are first-generation to complete College historically underrepresented at Institutes of higher ed and students who are determined to finish college early once we receive give all the applications and conduct the lottery we've been notify students of their acceptance or whether they've been placed on a waiting list by mail in March and so that's the conclusion of my Early College High School portion and I want to introduce you to miss joumana Mills and she is going to talk to you about King nurses and training good evening everyone I am going to give you a bit of information about our knit program as it is currently refer to why choose nursing currently the nursing of field is ranked number one highest needed occupation the Texas Gulf Coast Area with the median salary of over $75,000 a year when we started over 10,000 available jobs within a 10-year span which basically translate to when you graduate college you'll find a job pretty easily everybody wants a job when they graduate college what are the benefits of the nursing program to starting the nursing program here at cages and the first one is that we give you a high start to your prerequisites that you need to attend nursing school when is the career awareness we have mentors and Advising and Real World Learning simulations instead of so that you are grown into what it's like to be a nervous very early on in the program we have a Competitive Edge and so one thing that I really like about the program is that we have a guarantee 20 spots for students to insert into the nursing program so if you complete with the pastor that has D the TSI and the GPA requirement you are guaranteed a spot in San Jac nursing Pro and finally the tuition we pay for everything you're happy test your fingerprinting your your TSI prep your everything your scrubs we provide scrubs everything that you need to start the prerequisites we provide those things for you the design of a program is similar to that overly collagen that we have small learning communities and we provide the academic support the students I pray you will follow the same group from ninth grade until fourth grade and you you guys are groups and classes together I'm taking your AP Bio your anatomy and physiology so you learn to develop your study groups with each other and how to help each other progress into the courses we also have a requirement of the electives of everybody is required to take Evan of 8th grade I'm sorry 9th grade through 12th grade that is one of the requirements that it has to fit into your schedule and also AP Bio pre-ap chemistry and Algebra 2 is a requirement and you'll see a little bit more about that later we also offer some experiences with our partnership with the Harris County department where we have state-of-the-art equipment where you guys will get to play with nurse and and do a lot of cool things and what it's like to be a nurse here are some courses that you guys will be introduced to taking as your prerequisites as you can see it is very Lions heavy do while you're here 9th and 10th grade year we focus on getting you the experience with the science courses so that you are prepared once you start taking those college classes 10th grade summer and the requirements for the program are the application has to be turned in no later than February 5th by 4 p.m. it is similar to the early college application is exactly the same applications electronic you just have to check that you are submitting it for the net program and Miss Clark and myself will go through them to make sure he's putting the right pause you have to attend this is a really big one the summer course of your 10th grade year it is a requirement for the program you have to attend that stomach orders that year in order to start the program the advanced courses that I talked about a year AP biology and pre AP chem your temporary year and those are taken simultaneously together along with algebra 2 there's also a one-time $25 Supply fee that we used to pay for things that you guys will need for the program and also help us with your scrubs that has this cool little emblem on it like I'm wearing tonight that we give you with the scrubs for you guys to where we will give you one set of Scrubs your stop for your I'm sorry and then as part of the program there's a prerequisite that you will wear scrubs everydays the further you get into the program and the reason behind that is because as nurses you wear scrubs everyday I will try to get you guys in the habit of wearing your uniform everyday and so what I have mine it advised to do with you guys is a cohort will decide what colors you wear on what days and what do you guys want to do but there's also something that you must purchase on for the separate days after we purchase the ones that for you and now I would like to introduce Tommy the principle of the steam Academy good evening my name is Tommy Lee I am I going to miss nosetta in the principle of the STEM Academy the STEM Academy is a grade 6 through 12 program so normally our students enter stem on in Middle School however we have a few spots that are going to be open for high school so if you're interested in joining stem you have some friends and you eat you part about the Paw do you want to be a part of it we do have some availability for the high school now if you're in stem in Middle School you are good to go you do not need to apply for the program you're already going to be automatically enrolled in stem for high school that you don't have to apply the stem program is an advanced Academic Program similar to early college or the med program so our students are going to take pre-ap AP and dual credit classes the programs of study. the offer we have a advanced Science Program computer science engineering advanced math and we have a brand-new biomedical program that we just started this year they're going to do things such as crime scene investigation are DNA analysis and other forensic science activity so we just started that program great program that they have at the high school some of the things that stem is all about is project-based so at any given time are students are working on one to two different real-world problems so for example and biology our students created an app that will track that macro-nutrients of the food that or an algebra student created a campus fundraiser where they had to come up with a business plan and then presented similar to like shark on Shark Tank with actually had that I have a business and Pitch it to the what is principal to see if we can raise funds on campus the thing that we really try to empower our students within stem program we really try to teach those in play Billy skills so we teach our students how to overcome challenge collaboration we teach me how to be a part of a team on MLB teaching public speaking skills whenever our students finish a project they presented it to different people on campus we bring an actual people from stem careers to give our students feedback on their project so we really try to give our students that skill-set so when they graduate high school and ready to enter college or the work first similar to the other programs we do offer free college anywhere from 15 to 30 plus hours of college RCN start in their junior year they go to San Jac and take classes there we also give our students what week are stemtastic events and those are just stem experiences where kids will work on activities bringing guest speakers to do career talks we give our students different field trips for example going to take our kid connect to a client's Houston Forensic Science Center will host it that we also and certifications for a student's so there's a lot of different things that a stem program offers if you're interested in joining you can talk to your middle school counselor or reach out to mr. O'Keefe at no middle school or mr. Taylor at King Middle School and they can get you some information about how to apply that being said I'm going to introduce is Warren and she is going to talk about the mecca program good evening parents and students my name is Miss Woolridge and I'm the lead counselor at c e King High School I am so excited that we have this opportunity to reach out to you guys I wish we could see you face to face but we are taking the next step and getting this information to you so let me tell you some information about mechum azimuth I will mention before Mecca is a modified Early College so if you not if you're not chosen for their Early College opportunity on their side you still have that same opportunity on khsi to reach that goal of accomplishing college credits for the process from Mecca is you will apply in the tenth grade and when you apply in the 10th grade it is a almost a year long process to get everything that you need to start saying Jack when you're flying to 10th grade you must pass a college readiness test and it is called the TSI or you must meet the required STAAR EOC scores in order to take college courses students should register for advanced courses in their ninth grade year and consider Avid as an elective for support when you are taking college courses all the support that you can get in order to be successful and very helpful some important assessments that the students must also require is the PSAT that sat the ACT tsia that I mentioned before this applies to armeca next M an early college students and now I will introduce Miss Jennifer Williams and she will begin speaking about our technical dual credit courses my name is Benita Taylor and I am the Career Technical education coordinator and I'm going to talk about technical dual-credit instead of Jennifer but we have some very very exciting opportunities and Technical dual credit and as you see it it it it says Technical and so that usually means that it falls under Career and Technical education and it's not a part of Early College High School Nick armeca if you are in did and some of the programs that you see listed here you would definitely not be interested in one of those other three programs are we have K12 technical programs and they are listed auto collision repair cosmetology criminal justice diesel technology electrical technology emergency medical technology and that for seniors only medical assisting medical billing pharmacy tech Mission Pipe fitting which is again for seniors only and welding technology so I technical dual-credit programs usually actually began at San Jac in the 10th or 11th grade or what's great about this is we now have programs of study and you can begin in the CTE programs of study for technical programs 9th grade and so a lot of people ask the question how does this work with my endorsement well all these problems the study fall under the CTE endorsements and there are three seats the endorsements they are stem business and industry and public service and if you look at the diagram here I've already named the the technical do a credit program switcher at San Jacinto College and so if you are interested in those programs you would tell your counselor when they go for registration at middle school and just actually say you're interested in this particular program of study with a couple of a beats program they don't actually fall under a full program of study so you will note that you would just need to ask for it for instance belt medical billing as well as the process office technology again those are usually begin at 10th or 11th grade I just a little bit more information about technical dual-credit the district pays for I'm all tuition and supplies and as I said before students choose their program of study in the 8th grade the best dual credit certificate program usually begins in the 11th grade I have to what you would do if you would actually apply in 10th Grade and as Miss Morris said a little bit ago about the mecca program or the technical dual-credit programs you also are required to take the tsia and so when students graduate from the technical dual-credit programs you graduate with a level 1 or level 2 certificate of technology and these certificates allow you to be more marketable if some students choose to go directly to the workforce and and that is a good possibility with the certificate program or they can decide that they are going to go ahead and go to 2A a 4-year University or go to do for years at San Jac and that would be a ba degree an in addition to that all of the dual-credit programs are provided transportation we always like to to talk about Transportation because students always asphalt how do I get to San Jacinto College but at some of our students go in the when are academic programs or in the morning America problems are in the morning and our technical dual credit program start in the afternoon and buses provided for those you would just have to complete information that says that you are send in those programs it interested in transportation and I would recommend you look into Transportation because it is always difficult to park on campus the next I'd like to introduce Miss Andrea Thompson he is the work-based learning coordinator and she will talk about preparing for credit thank you Miss Taylor good evening to everyone again my name is Andrea Thompson and I'm the work-based learning coordinator for our Career and Technical education department so being induced Brands your student has the opportunity to get real-world learning which is going to prepare him or her for postgraduate options such as going on to further their education cuz remember for a two or four-year degree certificate programs apprenticeships job training and then of course employment which is the goal to be college career or military ready so if they get appointment that would be the career Readiness are students enrolled in any of our programs have access to practicums which would be like a clinical rotation or an internship that's built into the probe I'm so many hours that they would have to complete in order to fulfill their requirements they also receive information on the occupations that they're looking to go into any additional certifications that are aligned to their chosen text program and salary information for related careers that's one of the big things when I was in the classroom and I used to teach counseling and mental health are students without my students would always say Miss how much does this job pay how much does this I so they're going to get that information up front and it's usually ballpark salary data because it does vary depending upon what part of the country that your child would move to and want to work in but the but they have that credential makes them employable I'm there other work-based learning opportunities that enhance theoretical instruction that they get in the classroom setting and these work-based learning Trinity's are with industry professionals that are close to our district and also throughout the city and that's another opportunity just for them to network with companies and business owners and entrepreneurs who are working already working in the field in which they're wanting to get into and if they mr.lee talked about employability skills learning how to network have conversations if if your student worked it right they can potentially walk out of Sheldon with not only the credential but also with the job because they have network with some of their work based learning opportunities also according to Labor Day te the more education and credentials and individual has the more he or she can expect to earn over their lifetime earlier Miss Clark showed you some really good data of the numbers there are no guarantees in life however you want to prepare yourself as best as possible and it's just it the more education that you have the more credentials that you have especially in high-need areas like some of the programs that we offer here you're really setting yourself up you're setting yourself up yourself and your student up for Success learning college credits now prepares your students to enter the workforce early highly-qualified and prepare for a successful future yo practically giving them a head start in high school by earning some of these credentials and I'm now going to pass it off to miss Gallo thank you thank you Miss Thompson so parents students you've heard us mention Ave it quite a few times tonight so let me stop for a minute just to talk a little bit about Avid because Evan begins to look somewhat different in high so for some of you who been an avid through for three years as an eighth grader and your family. Do I need to continue Avid answer is yes because as you start taking these these more difficult courses particularly College 4th is whether they're technical or academic courses Early College stem these are tough academic courses so why not use Avid why not be a part of that elective course we're College Tutors are a part of your class room twice a week to help you with your organization and miserly mention collaboration is essential so you just need to work and learn to work in teams to answer question the reading is more difficult the writing assignment for how to ask questions in curry is a big deal in college because if you don't get it you have to have those skills to be able to ask your professor and specifically state where it is that you get lost and so avid is an elective class with the exception of Early College stem and nits where is a required class and students listen to this as you go further in your education and you become a junior and a senior you're going to want to start applying for scholarships and applying to universities so even though you've been a part of college courses you're going to continue I'm sure your post secondary education After High School your Avid teachers an hour College and Career Center Personnel will be in your Avid classroom helping you to complete those applications and to meet deadlines and to apply for financial aid so Avid begins to look very different as your courses in Cree and get and get more difficult in the NIT program you got the hesi nursing exam you got to be able to get through your background check you need help with anatomy and physiology or microbiology all that happened in Abbott and so do thank attic stays the same all four years it's Taylor to you and your program so now I'm going to turn it over to Miss Jennifer Williams and she's going to talk to you about some of the questions you maybe in yourself good evening future K2 parents are Panthers Panthers so my name is Miss Williams and I'm the gear up and secondary counseling coordinator and now that you've heard about all of the programs we must ask ourselves some questions right how motivated is my child well as parents were very motivated because we know how much money we're going to save and we know that our student is going to get ahead but it's important to help the students navigate through this process and not to do it for them as a parent we want them to learn how to seek help and advocate for themselves so when you're looking at that application make sure that your student is also a part of filling out that application how self-discipline does my child do credit courses require students to study outside of class on there on time do students need to make a schedule that works with their high school schedule and college courses and try their best to stick to it will I support my child's efforts right so now. are they in college now so are you so it's important to monitor their study habits and the time they spend on their college courses in order for the student to be successful they will need your help or getting and staying organized it's okay for you to ask for their login information and their passwords so that you can help to monitor their progress look at their grades in Blackboard will my child give up easily yes your child will try their best to get out of the program or to try to drop a class if it seems to be challenging or if it's too much for them my college and high school is not easy and we know that so that's why we make sure that we have supports and play such an avid to help them along the way but they also need to help themselves by sticking to a schedule and studying will my stool ask for help your student may or may not ask for help however they should ask for help and always advocate for themselves there's sometimes there a certain classes that may require them to go to a 2 or get some tutoring and they shouldn't be ashamed to do that college courses are not easy and we anticipate that they will struggle so and not because it's they can't do it but because it different and their young so we do expect them to use those resources such an avid tutors and to ask their professors for for help professors have office hours to help answer question and how students along the way they know that they're working with dual-credit high school students so they're willing to work with you if you are willing to ask those questions will my student attend class as expected well we hope so students will not be successful if they did not attend classes there classes face to face or virtually so attending every day is important as professors take attendance everyday and you don't want to miss anything important or any important information that may be giving during a lecture some some frequently asked questions and you've heard all of this already during his presentation but I'll go ahead and repeat it okay so somewhere asking where can I find the applications or the links to apply for dual so the links for the application for Early College High School and the NIT program are going to be online after this presentation I'm in anybody's at on the panel if I'm if I said that in direct me to direct me for stem if you're interested in applying for stem you need to talk to your AP at the middle school so at no Middle School Mr O'Keefe and King Middle School mr. Taylor okay so the applications will be available and if you want to apply for those programs it starts now so when can I apply for dual-credit Early College High School stem and programs have applications for you to begin in 9th grade so you need to apply now other programs such as meca academic and Technical programs have applications that become available during the studio 10th grade here but that doesn't mean sleep until 10 grade right you have to do really well and you have to challenge yourself so that you can be ready for those dual credit courses because again it's not easy can you earn credit and Technical programs yes all of our programs are college credit programs so you earn college credit and high school credit at the same time and you're raising your GPA while you're at it so make sure that if you do enroll in these college credit program that you do well you don't want to make 70 you want to make 100 in your classes sometimes we get questions about doing dual program so my next question that I always get is can I do Early College High School and Welding the answer is no Early College High School and Welding are two different programs that you must apply for so both of these programs take up more than half of your day on your schedule so it wouldn't fit in an 8. Day for you okay so you pick one or the other how do I earn my grades for both high school and college so when you apply to be in dual-credit you're also beginning your college Journey you will become college-ready and you take your first college classes while you're in high why you're taking those college classes they also count towards your high school credits which means you're already getting ahead in your future and parents were saving money is there a costume Bob so as Miss Clark and Miss Mills and mr. Lee stated earlier there are no fees for those programs The Early College High School the NIT program stem program technical program fees are also covered and Mecca and academic courses have a discount of 75% so let's just pretend that your classes cost $100 and you take $75 off and you're only paying $25 for a college course right so those are amazing savings but again we do need to be dedicated and I do the best from the very beginning is it all starts in 9th grade and the last question that we get is May I participate in sports yes you can and it depends on the sport that you want to play and the program that you are involved in so some of our programs are in the morning some of our college classes are taken in the morning and some college courses are taken in the afternoon so it all depends on which sport you're playing and you know also how much time you're going to put towards your college courses because it's important that you focus on these college courses so that you can move on After High School let's talk about next steps next week if you're in on this call and you're an 8th grader very important for you to pay attention next week in rccr touch data Avid or enrichment course you will be given a survey so during that week we're going to introduce you to more Career and Technical education programs talk some more about the dual-credit career technical education program you'll the week after that sometime you'll get a chance to talk to Miss Clark again during one of your advocacy classes and then we're going to explore dual-credit a little bit more next week end of the week you will complete a survey and that survey will indicate to us your interest okay so number one don't miss class next week participate complete the survey so how do I let somebody no I'm interested in Mecca right then complete the survey okay the next one make sure that you tell the high school counselor your decision so miss Woolworths can attest what is she is the lead counselor at the high school she and her team will be meeting with all 8th graders February 8th through the 12th if you're missing you can't talk to your high school counselor about the program that you have selected make sure you don't miss your classes so that when the high school counselor either Zoe's in or does a Google meet with your class you were there to talk about your schedule for grades nine through 12 in the programs that Galactic now you don't have to select one of the Dual credit programs that we share with you tonight there are other programs that are out there as well that are not dual-credit but regardless of what you choose to do you can't miss school if possible next coming weeks okay Early College in it we've already talked about tomorrow is the day that application will go lie yes there's an early college process a lottery process it is required by the state of Texas we keep the Learning Community small most years we have 400 application for only or I'm sorry 200 applications for only a hundred and twenty spots so it's important for you to show that you're interested in the Pro and by completing the application fully doing the essay so that we can see that this is what you really want to do and we'll know hey maybe it's not early college but it's them everything in your essay says you're really interested in stem and we can do and more Guidance with you before we actually have the lottery  we talked about where to get an application for that it is not online and is available from the middle school count for the 280 and then finally completing a survey or an applique and does not guarantee admission it is a part of the process and then we will be getting back to you to let you know whether your application was selected or not okay so that takes us to your question so at the very beginning I asked you to put your questions in the Q&A section and I know that I panel here has been working really hard answering some of those questions as we've gone along and so hopefully you've following the Q&A to see if your questions have been answered but at this time what I'd like to do is allow our panel members to address any of the most frequently asked questions or things that might be misunderstood or one of the and it may have just come in most recently so let's start with Miss Grable who is here tonight he is our early college high school counselor that we want to make sure that you get to know Miss Grable if you are interested in the Early College High School program and Miss grateful if you would if you do mute yourself and kind of let us know some of those common questions or anything that you think so far that apply for Early College sure good evening welcome everybody we are certainly excited to have you this evening of course I think one of the biggest questions is where do we find the application like has been mentioned live tomorrow after our presentation this evening on our website and so that's where you'll find the application for echhs Stan knit NECA and that that is where that'll be located and I think one of the biggest questions that I'm seeing is how do I know which program of study is best for my career I would encourage you to talk to your middle school counselors they would be able to help address that as far as with CHS we have actually 9 degree program that apply to almost every career you can think of so if you're interested in essay being a veterinarian we certainly do have programs a study that will get you working towards your Veterinary bachelor's degree so any career tours choice you can think of I would be able to help you pick which degree would work for you thank you Miss Grable yes it's PowerPoint someone ask Will a copy of the PowerPoint be issued to parents it will be provided as well as the recording of tonight on the Middle School website are you can look for that and by Monday the application will be available on the Middle School website tomorrow so when we say it will go live that's where you can find it go to the KMS homepage are the null Middle School homepage it will be pushed out through the district website but sometimes the things we put on the district homepage don't stay there because the information changes so quickly and it going to train goes to the bottom of the list so it stays check your middle school websites for sure are credits for the NIT program transferable to all universities with milder couple of questions about nits what does nit provide what is the medic adamy and the credit I'm so if you'd like to respond to that or the credit for the net program or basic or your basic prereqs to some nursing schools most nursing schools usually require the same what are pre rates are specifically tailored to the San Jac nursing program so while some of this course has made transfer I cannot guarantee you that all of them a transfer D Medicare is the academy where we focus on health science so many is a program of the medacademy but we offered some other health science courses are Health Science courses students to take who are interested in things in the medical field outside of just nursing and Mandela what did you say was the other question I'm sorry I was the transfer credits what does Med provide and I think that's pretty much it for that one there are a couple of questions missed would be and yes they are transferable to most universities you can almost jump into any nursing school in Texas with the same prereqs but you can now the state might be a little bit different Miss Taylor here's a couple of questions that are CTE related what's the best program for becoming a lawyer and if I want to be a physician's assistant what do I do the best program for becoming a lawyer would be your legal studies program of study we actually have two programs of study one is I guess it's one is law enforcement and one is legal studies it's one of those kind of things for you would look at the the courses within that program of study and look at the program of study sheet that's provided in our in our handbook course handbook and you will see something what courses are available there and I'm sorry what was the other question positions assistant which program would go for it with that a physician's assistant it really depends on what level you're looking at but you could potentially look at the healthcare Diagnostics program we have a you can actually sing can you in a program on the campus of health health science program on campus that will lead you to a patient care technician certification as well as a phlebotomy certification in the EKG certification will certifications would be great if you chose to you could go to San Jacinto College and be a part of the medical assisting certificate of technology program and are you do get much as far as work-based learning is concerned and clinicals are concerned in that program so either those either way would be great another question is can I do FSA and nits on his Taylor would you like to take that one SFA admit those programs are two totally different type of programs and while we would love to have you in FFA that you are required to be in a and either an act science program or something that has to to do with agriculture when you're part of FFA and you would not necessarily be able to do to programmes because Nick is a very demanding program and requires quite a bit of dual-credit involvement dual credit courses so I would say no that would not be a good choice for you okay Miss Wooldridge the associate's degree is this only with the early college program or also Mecca Not only was early college it is the opportunity with our Mecca program as well which is the modified early college program so you have that same opportunity of reaching associate's degree when you finish with the mecca program thank you next week will there be a meeting on Zoom so we're going to be meeting with students through their classes and yes that will be on Zoom where do you write the essay Miss Grable or Miss Clark where do you write the essay for the early college program I'll go ahead and answer that so the essay is a part of the application and I and when you access it on our website and I keep seeing the same question pop up so I'm going to restate it one more time that the applications are going to be made available on the Early College High School website and on your middle school website as early as tomorrow I'm at put the link to the Early College High School website in several of those answers tonight so that you can click on that link and see where they're going to go but the link will be or the the essay will be a part of the application also see several questions just really quickly Miss Gallo about transferring credits so what I can tell you about transferring credits that students receive at San Jacinto College is that let the credits what are transferable to most universities particularly in Texas but most public universities in the United States there may be circumstances of a class like save specific to Texas on maybe like Texas government that wouldn't transfer to a college in New York but for the courses that are on our plan the credits transfer usually without a problem now where you I want to look more carefully is at private universities and look at what their requirements are for transferring credits I think that's all I see for now miss gallo okay I did see one about early college and when we talked about degree plans for Early College the same degree plans are available from Mecca so that'll kind of cut down on some of those questions the difference is the amount of time and the money that's pretty the biggest difference Mecha is Early College in 2 years with 25% tuition and early college has an associate's degree in 4 years with no tuition so that's pretty much the biggest difference but someone has to call in the early college program does he associate of science or mathematics degree plan allow you to pursue software development and yes because you need heavy math so you would go with the associate of mathematics continue the math you need to pursue computer science and so just cuz you don't see the exact name of the degree know that those Associate's degrees lead into a bachelor's degree where you get into your more advanced course work Miss Clark what percentage of Early College grads receive scholarships oh I was getting ready to type this answer the the percentage can really vary from year to year and I was actually going to deferred to miss Gallo to see if she knew does off the top of her head out on truthfully would have to go back in and look and I'm to give you that exact number accurately but I do know that they vary from year to year and several of our seniors received scholarships are College and Career Center Miss Megan Smith in our College and Career Center not only works with early college but with the whole high school and with all of our seniors to encourage and promote scholarship opportunities all students for a variety of reasons and so she's a fabulous resource that that really works hard to support all students and getting scholarships and most of it that a lot of our scholarships that are gay Nanette Awards night go to Early College High School students and really dual-credit students when you look at the top 10% of Any Given graduating class at KHS the majority of those students Hanford will tooth rot do students have participated in dual-credit what do we do in cosmetology class well cosmetology is where you learn to get your cosmetology license so somebody else and are you going to talk about the fbl academy PSL Academy and so Miss Taylor I'll let you take that one so what we've done is we've chosen more to talk about the the the study there in each one of those academies are we actually have 29 or 30 program the study programs of study that fall under all of those Academy as 8th graders when we come over to the middle schools are at they come over to I act I would were talking in terms of Zoom these days but when we visit with you guys on Zoom we will actually talk about those Academy as well as we'll talk about all the problems if you remember I visited with all of your classes b c c c r and the Abbot classes so you guys could take an interest inventory to try to determine what caused you were interested in so when we visit with you guys next week we'll put all of that together and and talk about it thank you Miss Taylor I'm going to take one last question and can I address a few things that I've seen in the chat about the nursing program I see a few questions about acceptance into the nursing program so I wanted to talk a little bit about the process from 9th grade to really 11th grade 9th graders we trying to have an open process for any students that are interested I like to get a feel of the students who are interested so that I can begin to group you with your cohort so and then myself and Misty Alexander my counselor begin to focus on you and make sure you have what you need for the courses that you need knife right here do 9th grade year anybody can apply to the net program here is when you have to take those higher-level courses together that AP Bio that pre-ap chemistry on that is one of the prerequisites in order to apply to the nursing program and that 10th grade when you apply to San Jac pass the TSI so in order to get into the nursing program you have to pass the TSI I'm in order to begin to take those science and math courses to begin to take to get into program so I see a lot of number a lot of people asking me about number so unlike Early College I don't have a cap for freshman if 200 if you guys apply I will take 200 of you starting freshman year and then as we begin to move through the prerequisites to really begin to take those science courses are when my numbers kind of begin so fall off based on the students and you think you want to be a nurse 9th grade year and then I don't think I want to do that so they kind of begin to get interested in other programs that we offer so I usually end up in 11th grade year. Why do I start off with about 20 to 25 11th grade year that actually make it into the program and want to do the program but we we do not have a cap so if I have 50 kids that want to get into the program and make it and pass it we welcome you guys with open arms I seen another question about clinicals and the hesi clinicals are after they graduate from us with the fall semester why do I take the hesi with us and we also pay for hesi prep and we have a teacher on campus who is very familiar with the hesi and help our students prepared for the hesi before they take it before nursing school okay thank you so much mrs. Mills well I know parent student you've given us a lot of your time and entire our a lot of the questions that remain or which Graham should I go into if I'm interested into this career and that's what we cover in the CCR touch data Avid enrichment courses So my answer to you is next week don't miss because whether you're online or whether you're face-to-face because next week is your last week to pretty much meet with folks who can who can help you make that determination and then the counselors will be the high school this will be like I said zooming into your classrooms the week of February 8th to answer any additional questions and to help you create your high school schedule so why we would love to answer everybody's questions about all the different careers that they are there's just not enough time this evening to address them all but know that there will be time during the school day next week I think we pretty much addressed everything I saw the one question that said if I am going to be a welder do I wait and apply in 5th grade well you'll be applying for the college and taking your college entrance exam in the 10th grade but no you need to let your counselors and when you you're starving next week you need to let them know that you want to be a welder and you want to be in welding because you start your prerequisite classes in 9th grade so that's why we're coming all eighth-graders now and eighth grade parents now you've got some very important decisions and a very good District I can tell you this I've been in education a long time and there are very few districts that offer as many dual credit opportunities paid for by the district for our community I would love for everybody to take advantage of these programs but remember it takes more than your heart it takes a lot of work thank you again for your time if you have any additional questions please reach out to your counselor and will be in touch with you student next week thank you good night
