Construction to begin on building additions this summer

The Sheldon ISD Board of Trustees has approved the architectural services contract for the new 9th and 10th Grade Campus which provides a projected completion building opening during the 2025-26 school year. The campus will boast full academic features such as classrooms for each teacher, collaborative spaces, performing arts facilities, cafeteria, library and gymnasiums. The campus can serve up to 2,222 freshmen and sophomores. Freshman and sophomore students enrolled in the Early College High School and STEM programs will be housed at the King Senior High Campus, which will serve juniors and seniors. The Architect will begin design of the facility beginning in late spring 2023 complete by early spring 2024 with receipt of bids from contractor expected to follow. Construction will begin early summer with estimated substantial completion by late spring 2026.

Once the new 9th and 10th Grade Campus opens, the current 9th Grade Campus on C.E. King Parkway, will revert to its intended purpose as the Sheldon Education and Community Center. This center would serve as a building for the community with a mobile health unit in partnership with Harris County Public Health as well as opportunities for adult and community education courses.

Construction will begin summer of 2023 for the building additions at Null Middle School and Cravens Early Childhood Academy. Null Middle School’s additions will add a new wing to the east side of the building, and will provide 16 new classrooms, 3 science labs, and a new administration area, as well as provide exterior upgrades to the bus loop to accommodate more buses for loading and unloading students. Pictured below is rendering of what the building addition will look like. Construction is estimated to take 12 months.

Cravens Early Childhood Academy additions include eight new classrooms near the back southwest corner of the building. The project is anticipated to take approximately 12 months to complete once it is started in the summer of 2023. The photo below is a rendering of the building addition.

Architect selected for new 9th and 10th Grade Campus; Anticipated opening 2025-26 school year
Sheldon ISD Trustees have approved Huckabee as the architect for the new 9th and 10th Grade Campus. Now that an architect has been selected, the district can move forward with the design and contractor proposals to stay on schedule for an anticipated opening during the 2025-26 school year. The facility will be located adjacent to C.E. King High School and the exterior will complement the look of the senior campus (which would house 11th and 12th grades, as well as career and technical programs). The capacity will be for an enrollment of approximately 2,500 students.

Lessons learned during Hurricane Harvey have shown a need for a community facility to provide services in times of a crisis as well as provide support. Sheldon is an unincorporated community and a renovated Community Center is a way to give back through taxpayer dollars by providing services to assist residents.

Campus additions to break ground in 2023
Two major projects from Proposition A on the bond ballot included classroom additions to Null Middle School and Cravens Early Childhood Academy. Stantec is the architect for Null Middle School, and Huckabee has designed the addition for Cravens Early Childhood Academy. As part of the additions to the buildings, Cravens ECA will receive eight additional classroom spaces and Null Middle School will receive ten. The additional classrooms will accommodate campus enrollment growth.

Now that architects have been selected, the district and Board will review contractor proposals this spring with hopes to break ground on construction for the additions in the summer of 2023.

Campuses to begin discussions on facility improvements
Funds from Proposition A will also address facility improvements at existing schools and buildings. Campuses will begin discussions with immediate needs to be reviewed by the school and administration. A variety of factors will be considered such as the age and condition of the building. Some improvements may include updating roofs, HVAC, playground equipment and other facility needs.
