Credit by Examination

The Sheldon Independent School District is required to administer Credit by Examination (CBE) for acceleration without prior instruction four times each year. These tests are designed to provide an opportunity for students to receive credit for a grade level or course in which the student has had no prior instruction. The testing windows for this school year are listed below.

Registration Process - To register to take a CBE a student/parent must meet the following criteria:

The student is currently enrolled in a Sheldon ISD school.

The parent completes the Credit by Exam registration form which can be obtained from the campus counselor.

The parent turns the completed registration form in to the campus by the deadline listed above

Once the CBE registration is processed, the campus counselor will contact parents to schedule a testing date within the period listed above.

Please allow 4 weeks from the testing date to receive results.

Day of Testing

Students must arrive at the testing location fifteen (15) minutes prior to the start of each session

After registration, the students will remain in the testing room until their testing is completed.

Each exam has a maximum three (3) hour time limit.

After testing, the student is returned to their parent/guardian until the next testing session starts.

No lunch or supervision is provided or available to the student between sessions at the testing location.

Students must be picked up immediately upon completion of their final testing session of the day.

Advancement Process -
In order for students to receive a recommendation to advance, the following criteria must be met:

Grades 1-8:

The student/parent must have completed the Registration Process above.

The student must score a minimum of eighty (80) percent on each of the four criterion-referenced tests that cover the essential knowledge and skills of the respective grade they wish to skip.

Students that meet the eighty (80) percent required on all four CBE tests given in Session 1 or Session 2 will not advance to the next grade level until the following school year.

Grades 9-12:

The student/parent must complete the Registration Process above.

A student may earn credit for an academic subject in which the student has received no prior instruction if the student scores:

Eighty percent or above on a criterion-referenced test that covers the essential knowledge and skills of the respective course they wish to skip.

Please review the appropriate review sheets prior to testing.  Review sheets explain what to expect and what will be covered (TEKS).

CBE Review Sheets

Detailed information on Credit by Exams can be found in board policy.   In June of 2013, the state changed several elements of Credit by Exam through the legislature.   Districts are now offering CBE four times per year and the passing standard for CBE without Prior Instruction is now 80%.  In order to register for CBE, conferencing must take place very early in the school year for the fall testing dates, in mid-fall for the early Spring test date, and before May for the summer test dates.   After the parent conference and principal authorization, the information is given to the district testing coordinator in order to begin ordering exams.  Students complete the tests under strict guidelines and the tests are then shipped to TTU for scoring.  Results are usually received three to four weeks later.  Late requests cannot be honored due to the timelines for ordering, shipping and scoring, but another opportunity will exist at the next testing window.

For students with NO PRIOR INSTRUCTION for the tests they are taking…. 80% is the passing standard.

  • Tests for grades Kinder – 5th include 4 tests (ELA/Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies)
  • Tests for grades 6th-8th include 8 tests (ELA/Reading A, ELA/Reading B, Math A, Math B, Science A, Science B, Social Studies A, Social Studies B).  These grade levels take “semester exams”, rather than year-long exams.

For students enrolled in grades Kinder-8th in the FALL:

If a student can show at least 80% mastery on CBEs for all tested subject areas, then the student is allowed to “skip” the current grade of enrollment and be placed in the next grade of enrollment.  The student will miss part of the new grade level instruction, since results are received during the school year.  8th grade students will begin high school courses with the understanding that they may not have enough days to earn credits for courses during the fall semester.   It could be better for the student to take the CBE for high school courses.

For students enrolled in grades Kinder-8th in the SPRING for Early Spring Testing:

If a student can show at least 80% mastery on CBEs for all subject areas (ELA/Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies), the student is promoted to the next grade.  This means the spring testing (STAAR, TELPAS, etc.) will be at the next grade level.  8th grade students will begin high school courses with the understanding that they may not have enough days to earn credits for courses during the spring semester.  It could be better for the student to take the CBE for high school courses.

For Kinder-7th grade students testing in early summer:

If a student can show at last 80% mastery on CBEs for all subject areas (ELA/Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies), the student is promoted to the “next” grade in the fall.  This means the student “skips” the grade level mastered and is placed in the grade that follows it.  There is no loss of instructional time during the school year.

For 8th grade students testing in early summer:

Students select high school credit courses for which they would like to earn credits prior to attending high school courses for those credits.

For students enrolled in grades 9th-12th in the FALL:

Students take CBEs for specific semester courses.  If the student demonstrates at least 80% mastery with no prior instruction, the high school credit is awarded.   The state’s End-of-Course Testing requirements apply to CBE exams also, and are factored into the grade posted for credit.   The courses do not impact GPA.

For students enrolled in grades 9th – 12th in the SPRING:

Students take CBEs for specific semester courses. If the student demonstrates at least 80% mastery the high school credit is awarded.  At this time, the two state providers for Credit by Exam (University of Texas and Texas Tech) have not validated, as required by state law, exams for Algebra I, Biology, English I, English II, and Us History.  Until these tests have been validated, we will not be able to offer these exams.

For information on CBE without prior instruction and CBE with prior instruction, please contact your student’s counselor and read board policy.   There is a link to board policy on the Sheldon ISD website.  Students are responsible for paying for CBEs when there is PRIOR INSTRUCTION.
