Construction Updates

January 24, 2024

Construction is on schedule for the additions at Null Middle School and Cravens Early Childhood Academy. Construction is expected to be completed prior to the start of the 2024-25 school year. Cravens ECA will receive eight additional classroom spaces, and Null Middle School will receive ten. The additional classrooms will accommodate campus enrollment growth.

The design phase for the 9th and 10th Grade Campus is nearing completion, with construction expected to begin this summer and plans to open the school in 2026.  The facility will be located adjacent to C.E. King High School. The design for capacity will accommodate an enrollment of approximately 2,500 9th and 10th students. The senior campus will serve 11th and 12th grade students, as well as all high school students enrolled in career and technical programs.

Once the new facility has opened, the current 9th Grade Campus will revert back to its original purpose as the Sheldon Education and Community Center.  This center would serve as a building for the community with a mobile health unit in partnership with Harris County Public Health as well as opportunities for adult and community education courses.

Additional projects from the 2022 bond election have started and include:

  • All elementary schools will receive playground renovations and replacements this spring.
  • A roof assessment assessment has been completed and repairs and renovations to facilities will begin this summer.
  • New fencing around schools will be installed beginning this spring for added measures of safety.
  • Design work has been completed with Exhibit Concepts for both Early Childhood Academies for the pre-kindergarten Fueling Brains classrooms. Classrooms are featured in a variety of thematic designs geared toward generating creativity to make learning exciting for our younger students.
  • The FFA Agricultural Barn will receive new fencing, lighting, building repairs that will assist with upkeep of animals, roof renovations, and more.
  • Additional safety and security enhancements will begin in 2024 and include security camera upgrades, new fencing around schools, traffic gates, and door security upgrades.
  • In February, the track at Crenshaw Stadium will receive repair work, with a new scoreboard and sound system to complement the new lights installed earlier this school year.
  • Additionally the bleachers in the girls’ gymnasium at King Middle School will be replaced this year. These items are funded with bond money from 2016.

Construction began and is ongoing at both the Null MS Expansion and Cravens ECA Addition Projects.  Design for the New 9th and 10th Grade Center is ongoing progressing into the Design Development Stage.

The 2022 bond package is well underway. Last month, the school board selected the final renderings of the exterior facade for the 9th and 10th Grade Campus. Sheldon ISD is now moving forward with completing the Design Development drawing package. After the completion of design development, the final phase of construction documents will follow leading to contractor selection and eventual construction for an anticipated opening date in 2026.

The facility will be located adjacent to C.E. King High School. The design for capacity will accommodate an enrollment of approximately 2,500 9th and 10th students. The senior campus will serve 11th and 12th grade students, as well as all high school students enrolled in career and technical programs.

Construction has begun and is ongoing at both the Cravens Early Childhood Academy and Null Middle School Expansion Projects. The Cravens ECA will receive eight additional classroom spaces. The  Null Middle School Expansion will receive ten. The additional classrooms will accommodate campus enrollment growth. Expected Completion for both projects is Summer 2024.

Additionally, a district-wide assessment has been completed for playground improvements. Some campuses will receive full replacement of playground equipment with the balance of campuses received repairs. At the September School Board meeting, the board approved replacement of all  playground equipment for Carroll, Monahan, Royalwood and Sheldon Elementary Schools.

Sheldon has also purchased five additional school buses to accommodate student enrollment growth. Approximately one-third of the student population uses bus transportation to and from school. The district is in the process of conducting district wide facility assessments including roof repairs, fencing repairs, restroom repairs, repairs to marquee signage as well as updates to the agriculture barn.

Construction to begin on building additions this summer

The Sheldon ISD Board of Trustees has approved the architectural services contract for the new 9th and 10th Grade Campus which provides a projected completion building opening during the 2025-26 school year. The campus will boast full academic features such as classrooms for each teacher, collaborative spaces, performing arts facilities, cafeteria, library and gymnasiums. The campus can serve up to 2,222 freshmen and sophomores. Freshman and sophomore students enrolled in the Early College High School and STEM programs will be housed at the King Senior High Campus, which will serve juniors and seniors. The Architect will begin design of the facility beginning in late spring 2023 complete by early spring 2024 with receipt of bids from contractor expected to follow. Construction will begin early summer with estimated substantial completion by late spring 2026.

Once the new 9th and 10th Grade Campus opens, the current 9th Grade Campus on C.E. King Parkway, will revert to its intended purpose as the Sheldon Education and Community Center.  This center would serve as a building for the community with a mobile health unit in partnership with Harris County Public Health as well as opportunities for adult and community education courses.

Construction will begin summer of 2023 for the building additions at Null Middle School and Cravens Early Childhood Academy. Null Middle School’s additions will add a new wing to the east side of the building, and will provide 16 new classrooms, 3 science labs, and a new administration area, as well as provide exterior upgrades to the bus loop to accommodate more buses for loading and unloading students. Pictured below is rendering of what the building addition will look like. Construction is estimated to take 12 months.

Cravens Early Childhood Academy additions include eight new classrooms near the back southwest corner of the building. The project is anticipated to take approximately 12 months to complete once it is started in the summer of 2023. The photo below is a rendering of the building addition.

Architect selected for new 9th and 10th Grade Campus; Anticipated opening 2025-26 school year
Sheldon ISD Trustees have approved Huckabee as the architect for the new 9th and 10th Grade Campus. Now that an architect has been selected, the district can move forward with the design and contractor proposals to stay on schedule for an anticipated opening during the 2025-26 school year. The facility will be located adjacent to C.E. King High School and the exterior will complement the look of the senior campus (which would house 11th and 12th grades, as well as career and technical programs). The capacity will be for an enrollment of approximately 2,500 students.

Lessons learned during Hurricane Harvey have shown a need for a community facility to provide services in times of a crisis as well as provide support. Sheldon is an unincorporated community and a renovated Community Center is a way to give back through taxpayer dollars by providing services to assist residents.

Campus additions to break ground in 2023
Two major projects from Proposition A on the bond ballot included classroom additions to Null Middle School and Cravens Early Childhood Academy. Stantec is the architect for Null Middle School, and Huckabee has designed the addition for Cravens Early Childhood Academy. As part of the additions to the buildings, Cravens ECA will receive eight additional classroom spaces and Null Middle School will receive ten. The additional classrooms will accommodate campus enrollment growth.

Now that architects have been selected, the district and Board will review contractor proposals this spring with hopes to break ground on construction for the additions in the summer of 2023.

Campuses to begin discussions on facility improvements
Funds from Proposition A will also address facility improvements at existing schools and buildings. Campuses will begin discussions with immediate needs to be reviewed by the school and administration. A variety of factors will be considered such as the age and condition of the building. Some improvements may include updating roofs, HVAC, playground equipment and other facility needs.
