Spring Time

Our second semester has started today. Our exciting year is already half over. First semester flew by as we began learning our letters, sounds, colors, patterns, numbers and many science and social studies concepts. Kindergarten is starting to read now and should be bringing home readers each night. Parents please read to your child every night. Children who are read to on a regular basis have more academic success. We have many kindergarten students who are involved in our "Wild About Reading" program and will earn medals for reading. Pre-kindergarten students are working with a new curriculum this year. Frog Street is the new prekindergarten curriculum. It has many great literature books and great activities that the students are enjoying.

Every Thursday we send home the school newsletter. Please read this each week as it will keep you up to date with all the wonderful happenings and up-coming events at Sheldon Early Childhood Academy. It is a pleasure working with your children each day. Thank you for your continued support.

Holiday Happenings

Dear Parents and visitors,

Our fall semester has really flown by this year. We started our holiday happenings with a wonder Thanksgiving Lunch. We had a wonderful turnout on November 17. On November 18 our prekindergarten classes had a Thanksgiving Pow Wow. They dressed as Pilgrims and Indians and shared a snack. They also performed some songs for the many parents who were able to attend.

On Thursday December 15 we will have our Christmas program at 6:30 Thursday December 15 is also our prekindergarten Christmas party day. Friday December 16 will be our kindergarten Chirstmas parties.

Our prekindergarten students are really working to learn thier letters, sounds, numbers, patterns and vocabulary word. Kindergarten students are beginning to read and have guided reading lessons everyday. They are also working on patterns and graphs.

Parents thank you for all your support this fall. We look forward to a very busy and purposeful spring. Please continue to read to your child every night.

From Sheldon Academy we wish your family a very happy and safe Christmas break. We will see students back on January 3, 2012.

Polar Express Family Night

On Friday December 10,2010 Sheldon ECA Jaguars and parents attended a fun filled family night. It was our annual Polar Express night. This year Santa and Mrs. Claus came to meet the students and have pictures made. The bounce house and tattoo station were big hits. There was hot chocolate and cookies as well as popcorn. The Mrs. Steinley and Mrs. Snyder gave parents academic learning games to take home as well as lots of parenting information. We raffled off some wonderful baskets and a child's bike. The money made will go to purchasing our own bounce house. The students earn bounce time by having perfect attendance each nine weeks.

Parents and students we wish you a wonderful holiday break. Be safe and enjoy yourself. Come back on January 4, 2011 with a big smile and lots of energy to keep up that wonderful learning.

Fall Family Fun Night

Thursday, September 16, 2010 Sheldon Academy held a Fall Family Fun Night. We had a great attendance with over 75 families represented. The students were able to guide a tour of the school for their parents. The students and parents visited the computer lab to learn about our school website and other educational sites. The art lab held painting sessions. The stage was full of hokey pokey and chicken dancers. The snack bar had many customers for chili cheese nachos. Mrs. Lynch our awesome librarian conducted two storytimes and had a great book fair going on. The best events were the teachers who created games for the parents and their child to take home and play. Jagger, our mascot, made the rounds and took many pictures. Look in our photo gallery to see the fun times that were had.

Parents we will host another Family Fun Night in December. It will be a pajama night with a movie and other fun activities. So watch the weekly newsletter to see "What's Happening at Sheldon Academy".

Great School Opening for 2010-2011

Welcome to all our new Jaguar students and parents. We have had a very wonderful and busy first two weeks of school All the new students are learning their way around the school. They have been introduced to our friend Benny the Bunny in the library and will soon be checking out books to bring home.

Our kick-off activity for the new year will be our Family Fun Night on September 16. Please come and bring the family. It will be fall festival with the book fair, bounce house, dance, food and make it take games.

So please plan on attending.

We will also be kicking off our big fundraiser on Sept 13. Our students will be selling Little Caesar Pizza kits. The money will purchase a bounce house and Leap Frog tag readers for the library.

I expect this to be a fabulous for our school. I look forward to learning about each your children and helping them have a successful school.

Family Dance Night

On Friday March 26, 2010 Sheldon Academy held our first Family Dance Night. We had a great turn out and lots of fun. We were so glad to see so many families dancing, eating, face painting and listening to stories. It was a great time. The dance was a fundraiser. We wanted to raise enough money to buy our mascot, Jagger, costume. And thanks to all the students and parents who attended we were very successful. We raised $1,464. Enough to buy Jagger and fund field day activities. Thank you parents for supporting our activities. Please remember to complete the parent survey and return that to your child's teacher. We need your imput to improve our school. Have a wonderful Easter weekend.

100 Days of School

February 2, 2010 will mark our 1st day of school this year. A hundred school days ago when we began this year we were all so excited about the possibilities this year would bring. The staff here at Sheldon Academy sees these exciting things happening every day with your children. Each day they arrive wearing a smile and eager to learn. We all see such growth occurring in all the students both physically and academically. They are becoming such great independent people and really a joy to work with each day. It is so hard to believe our year is already half complete.

Next week we will really focus on introducing our students to the concept of college and careers. It will be a fun and exciting week for us and our students.

The New Year is Here!

This week has flown by! We quickly got back into the school routine by doing our awards ceremony for the second nine weeks. Students were so excited as they came by and told Ms. James and I about how they had gotten character hugs from Clifford, gotten award certificates, and that they had earned bounce passes. We are so proud of our students for working so hard.

It is hard to believe that half a school year has already gone by. Ms. James and I would like to thank all our parents for their involvement at the school as well as at home with their children. We cannot be effective in our job as a school without you. We would also like to thank our staff for working so hard to keep our students safe, well fed, and learning. You have made Sheldon ECA a place where our bucket is truly overflowing!

Happy Holidays

Happy Holiday to all Jaguar families. The first half of the year is already gone. It has been great to see the students happily learning and succeeding. My wish is for all of you to have happy and safe holidays. Enjoy spending time with your children. Please continue to read each night with your child as it provides great learning and conversation opportunities.

When we return on January 5 it is the start of our second semester and lots of new activities. Please continue to read the weekly newsletter sent home each Thursday. Our newsletter will let you know of upcoming events and other school information.

Holiday Festivities

Students were able to start off the holiday season with a great teeth cleaning. The mobile dentists were on campus last week. Many of our students were seen, and they all took home their reports and a new toothbrush!

Thanksgiving gives us a whole other holiday to learn from. Several of our kindergarten classes started the season by learning about the fruits and vegetables of the season, and the different tastes of each food.

After students shucked their corn, gathered their cranberries, and talked about all the parts of each they were able to enjoy.

Next was the school Thanksgiving luncheon. We sold 300 tickets, and had many happy families sitting down to eat their delicious lunch together.

Students in Mrs. Bell's class made Native American headdresses for us. They even gave each of us a Native American name. From left to right, Mrs. Maglievaz became "Enchanted Rose", Mrs. James became "Calm Spring", and Ms. Steinley became "Dark Wood."

Today the pre-k students held their pow-wow. The classes were dressed up as pilgrims and indians, and looked super cute.

As you can see, we have had a busy couple of weeks. We have also been teaching and learning every second of the day. None of us can even believe that it is time for Thanksgiving- where is our year going? Have a safe, wonderful Thanksgiving break!

Catching Up

This has been a busy place the past couple of weeks. First we had the students from the Early Learning Center parade through our halls and show off their cute halloween costumes.

The next event that happened was our sock hop to celebrate 50's day. We had so many cute poodle skirts, leather jackets, and slicked back hair do's! You can check pictures out on the front of the administration page of the students ready for their sock-hop.

Fundraiser boxes were delivered last Thursday. If you have not picked your child's fundraiser items up, please drop by the front desk and our friendly front office staff will be happy to assist you.

Last but definitely not least, the book fair arrived to be set up. All week the book fair will be open, and students will have a chance to purchase books, pens, pencils, posters, puppets and much, much more! This is a great time to start thinking about Christmas gifts. Books are always great, and Ms. Lynch has lots of great items for stocking stuffers.

Ms. Lynch will be hosting breakfast with books on Wednesday and Thursday, so feel free to come on in early to have a little breakfast, browse the goodies, and do a little shopping.

Tuesday the counselor, Ms. Snyder will be holding 2 different parent workshops- one in the morning and on in the evening. The topic will be "Raising Responsible Jaguars" and she would love to meet with and share a little counselor wisdom with you and all. This will also be an opportunity to ask questions that may have been on your mind.

Parent Conference Day

Parents who braved the heavy rain and slick streets, "Thank you, thank you, thank you." I cannot believe that nine weeks have passed so quickly. Your children have already grown so much, both physically and academically. They have been learning so much and the teachers were very excited to share the information with you.

Coming soon will be our book fair and the counselor will also be conducting some great presentations on homework, discipline and other topics for parents. Also, our big Thanksgiving lunch will be on November 19th. Buy your tickets now!

Last week our hallways became even more interesting as students were learning about details. Their teachers traced the outline of each student on paper, and students were then asked to add the details to themselves. It was interesting to walk down the halls and see the finished products. Some students have a very detailed paper person from their hair right down to their fingernails. On the other hand, some students had just colored in their clothes and added a little hair. Both of these types of paper people caused our students to stop and have conversations about why they look so different, and why some of their friends drew a person that looks nothing like them. Homecoming Parade

Saturday we kicked off the week of Homecoming for the C.E. King Panthers with the annual homecoming parade. The parade began at Cravens Academy and ended at C.E. King High School. We had several students and parents that were able to ride the float and the kids really enjoyed throwing candy. The funny part was that the kids didn't understand they should wait and throw the candy at people. They would grab a handful and throw it into the street where there were no people. Needless to say, our candy didn't make it through the entire parade, but those kids had a blast throwing candy!

I saw one little girl that rode on the float in the cafeteria today and her comment was "Do you remember getting to throw the candy?" They may not understand all of what homecoming means and what it entails, but they will remember getting to ride in that parade and throw candy for years to come.

Fundraiser Update

Fundraiser orders are coming in every day now. We are so excited to see how many are being returned. Our pre-k students have outdone themselves this year with their participation numbers. We are in the process of checking to make sure all the order sheets match the money turned in, organizing the orders by teacher name, and getting them all packed for shipping. If anyone still has those orders laying on your kitchen table that you have forgotten to send in, it is OK. We would rather have them late than not at all. We are looking forward to seeing how much we earned and what we can purchase for our students. The end of the first nine weeks is quickly approaching, and we want to have some incentives to reward them with for an amazing first nine weeks.

As soon as we know the final amounts, we will let you know. Thanks again parents!

Special Activities

We had some very special and interesting activities last week at Sheldon Academy. On Thursday Jungle Jim came to speak to us. He brought lots of frogs, snakes, spiders and bugs with him. He told us about each one and what they like to eat and what kind of house they like to live in. It was really exciting and fun to see all those animals. He had a huge spider that likes to eat birds. Wow I will stay away from that spider.

Then on Friday the Museum of Natural Science came brought the inflatable Discovery Dome. The students went inside the dome and watched a movie about the night sky. The movie told about the stars and planets in the Milky Way system. It was cool to pretend to be a astronaut on the space shuttle flying through space.

Sheldon Jaguars are learning new and interesting things everyday. Pictures of these activities should be posted soon in our photo gallery.

We are starting our fifth week of school already. We are so busy learning new things everyday. Is is a joy to see the students moving from place to place with pride and confidence. Parents I really encourage you to read our school newsletter each week. We send it home each Thursday and it is filled with what is happening at Sheldon Academy.

We have changed our policy regarding homework for our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students beginning this year. We will not be sending packets of paperwork home for them to complete. Instead parents, we are asking that you read to your child each night. Make flashcards with letters and numbers and have fun playing with your child. Research studies have shown that the single most important factor to becoming a good reader is having been read to. So please read each night and discuss what the story was about.

I look forward to a wonderful year and to working together to help your child's first years in school be amazing and educational.
