Good morning! I hope the holiday break was a great time to spend with family and friends. We're glad to see our Panthers back on campus and safe from their vacation. A few reminders about upcoming events:
One of our goals is to increase the involvement of our parents here on campus. We'll be having a Report Card Pick-up Night next Tuesday, January 15, 2012, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. This will be an opportunity for you to speak with teachers about setting up an appointment, if necessary, if you're concerned about your student's progress. We will have door prizes and light refreshments.
We will resume tutorials today. In the event of the anticipated flood watch for this afternoon, we may cancel after-school activities.
Friday will be a "Bulls on Parade/Go Texans" day. Students will be able to wear Texans shirts, jerseys, or sweatshirts Friday in support of our home team!

¡Buenos días! Espero que las vacaciones fue un gran momento para estar con su familia y amigos. Estamos contentos de ver que nuestros Panthers regresaron segura de sus vacaciones. Algunos recordatorios acerca de los próximos eventos:
Uno de nuestros objetivos es aumentar la participación de nuestros padres aquí en la escuela. El próximo Martes, 15 de enero 2012, tendremos una oportunidad para recoger las calificaciones de su hijo/a de las 4:30 p.m. hasta las 6:30 p.m. Esta será una oportunidad para que usted hable con los maestros sobre cómo configurar una cita, si es necesario, si usted está preocupado por el progreso de su estudiante. Tendremos premios y refrescos.
Vamos a reanudar tutoriales hoy. En el caso de la vigilancia de inundación prevista para esta tarde, podremos cancelar actividades después de clases.
El viernes será un "Bulls on Parade / Go Texans" día. Los estudiantes podrán usar camisas del equipo futbol "Texans", camisetas, sudaderas o el viernes en apoyo de nuestro equipo de casa!

I came across this article and wanted to share this as I think there are some actions here that are simple to adopt and refocus on what really matters. Election 2012

This is a reminder that tomorrow is that time to exercise our civic duty and get out and vote! I hope you have already or are planning to vote tomorrow. Our campus is designated as a voting site, so please pass on the message that voting will occur in the band hall and choir hall tomorrow. The best point of entrance is the side next to the football stadium. We will have signs designating where to go. Get out and vote!

¡Este es un recordatorio de que mañana es el momento de ejercer nuestro deber cívico y salir a votar! Espero que tengan ya o tiene previsto votar mañana. Nuestra escuela ha sido designada como un sitio de votación, así que por favor pase el mensaje de que la votación tendrá lugar en el salón de la banda y el coro mañana pasillo. El mejor punto de entrada es el lado al lado del estadio de fútbol. Vamos a tener signos que designan a dónde ir. ¡Salga y vote!

Upcoming Events!

Greetings!

I apologize for not posting recently, but it's hard to believe that we are already in our ninth week of school! We had our first school dance last Wednesday with the assistance of our Panther PTO as they raised money for future programs here at KMS! Thank you to our parents that volunteered last week.

Our first grading period ended last week and students will be receiving report cards soon. Students will have a holiday on October 29, 2012; however, we will be here as this day is reserved as our Parent Conference Day. Teachers will hold conferences from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. If you wish to schedule an appointment with your child's teacher(s), please contact either Ms. B. Trevino or Mrs. K. Hernandez to schedule an appointment with your child's teacher.

We will also be having our first Pep Rally of the school year on October 31, 2012. Please join us as we prepare for our weekly volleyball and football contests against NMS!

Thank you for encouraging your students to participate in Red Ribbon Week! Students have enjoyed wearing crazy socks and ties this week. The rest of the week's events include:
"Band Against Drugs" (wear headbands or wristbands)
Team Jersey Day

Back to School Night!

It's amazing to believe that we are already in the fifth week of school! I want to thank you for your support in helping us get off to a great start to the school year. We will be having our Back to School night this Wednesday from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. This will be an opportunity for you to hear the great things we have in store this year for your students and a time to catch up with your child's teacher. We hope you can make it out! We will begin sign in at 6:15.

All About Our Students

Our students have been hard at work during their first week. We are in our second year of implementing the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) system for our seventh and eighth grade students. Students apply to be in the program in the spring and are accepted for the following school year. Students gain skills on how to study, how to be successful in class, and receive tutoring from college students twice a week.

The artwork you see when you enter the main office was created by our students last year. We have a "Paws for Success" time built into our schedule that allows us to provide extra help for students in math and reading, but we also use that time for students to prepare for UIL competitions and participate in other activities. The artwork completed was done by a group of outstanding artists from the 2011-2012 school year. We'll continue to put up artwork to showcase the many talents of our Panthers!

Off to a Great School Year to 2012-2013

We are off to a great school year with a successful "Take a Look Thursday" held on August 23, 2012. We had over 230 families in attendance!

We opened our doors yesterday for our 2012-2013 school year and have a had a great beginning. Please take a moment to review the dress code expectations with your child to ensure they are in dress code when they arrive. We'll keep you posted on updates!

STAAR Week! Panther Parent Notes for April 23, 2012

Good afternoon!

I hope everyone had a great weekend! The weather was a perfect opportunity to get outside and I hope you were able to do so. We had a successful “Town Hall” meeting last Thursday evening. Our Superintendent, Dr. Giles, spoke to our parents and we were fortunate to have four of our board members in attendance. Thank you to Ms. Archie, Mr. Lipscomb, Mr. Norwood, and Mr. Rivas for their attendance and support. We look forward to providing more of these opportunities in the coming school year!

This week is our big week for state testing. Our sixth graders will be taking the STAAR exam for the first time, while our seventh and eighth graders will continue their assessments in various subject areas. Here were some questions that I was asked that I would like to pass along:

When is my student testing?

When will results be available?

We will not receive results until the summer of 2012. We have created a list of students that we are targeting to receive assistance in summer school based upon prior performance on district assessments, grades, and prior performance on TAKS. We will notify students and parents of summer school in May.

How can I prepare my student to be successful on test day?

· Make sure they get a good night’s sleep

· Make sure they eat a good breakfast (proteins, fruits, carbohydrates)

· Plan on having student stay during entire testing (no doctor’s appointments)

· Make sure they have a lunch (if they want to bring one)

We will not have any tutorials or afterschool activities this week. Please plan accordingly.

Our teachers have done a great job preparing our students, so I am confident we will be successful!

Espero que todos hayan tenido un fin de semana! El tiempo era una oportunidad perfecta para salir a la calle y espero que ustedes fueron capaces de hacerlo. Tuvimos un éxito "Ayuntamiento" reunión la noche del pasado jueves. El Superintendente, el Dr. Giles, habló a nuestros padres y tuvimos la suerte de tener cuatro de los miembros de la junta en la asistencia. Gracias a la Sra. Archie, el Sr. Lipscomb, el Sr. Norwood, y el señor Rivas, por su asistencia y apoyo. Esperamos poder ofrecer más de estas oportunidades en el próximo año escolar!

Esta semana es nuestro gran semana para los exámenes estatales. Nuestros alumnos de sexto grado tomarán el examen de STAAR por primera vez, mientras que los estudiantes de séptimo y octavo continuará sus evaluaciones en diferentes materias. Cuando estarán disponibles los resultados?

No vamos a recibir los resultados hasta el verano de 2012. Hemos creado una lista de estudiantes que están destinados a recibir asistencia en la escuela de verano basada en el desempeño previo de las evaluaciones del distrito, las calificaciones y el desempeño previo en la prueba TAKS. Vamos a notificar a los estudiantes y los padres de la escuela de verano en mayo.

¿Cómo puedo preparar a mi estudiante a tener éxito el día del examen?

• Asegúrese de que duermen bien por la noche
• Asegúrese de que comen un buen desayuno (proteínas, frutas, hidratos de carbono)
• Plan de tener estancia del estudiante durante toda la prueba (no hay citas del médico)
• Asegúrese de que tengan una comida (si es que quiere traer a uno)

No tiene ningún tutoriales o actividades después de la escuela esta semana. Por favor, planificar en consecuencia.

Nuestros profesores han hecho un gran trabajo preparando a nuestros estudiantes, por lo que estoy seguro de que será un éxito!

Homework Idea!

One of the things that I am often asked by parents is, "What can I do at home to help my child succeed at school?" We all know that as adults, we use many of the skills we learned to navigate through our day. I was reminded of this today as I visited classrooms and saw the vocabulary model in the picture posted. As a college student, I began to keep a personal dictionary of words that I learned while reading on my own. I'd write the word, find the definition, and I'd copy the sentence that I found it in. This was a great tool for me, as I soon began to find words that I encountered frequently.

The idea here is simple. You find a word, then have your child determine what it means using a dictionary (physical or online) and find pictures or draw pictures that help them understand what the word means. It's easy, fun, and it helps them develop a strong vocabulary!

Una de las preguntas que a menudo me hacen los padres es: "¿Qué puedo hacer en casa para ayudar a mi hijo/a a tener éxito en la escuela?" Todos sabemos que cuando sean adultos, usamos muchas de las habilidades que hemos aprendido a navegar a través de nuestro día. Me acordé de esto hoy en día mientras visitaba las aulas y vio el modelo de vocabulario en las imágenes comentadas. Como estudiante de la universidad, empecé a llevar un diccionario personal de palabras que he aprendido al leer por mi cuenta. Me gustaría escribir la palabra, encontrar la definición, y me gustaría copiar la frase que he encontrado pulg Esto fue una gran herramienta para mí, ya que pronto empezaron a encontrar las palabras que me he encontrado con frecuencia.

La idea aquí es simple. Early College High School Parent Night!

Mr. Painter, the new Principal for the ECHS, spoke to parents and students about this great program that will celebrate its inaugural year for the 2012-2013 school year.
