• November Update!

Posted by Adan Chavez at 11/17/2012 2:00:00 PM
Just a quick update on what is going on in Computers. First off, I have noticed a tremendous improvement in the way students are grasping various concepts as of lately! Our 1st graders are learning the various functions of technology, the 2nd graders are learning how to insert clip art into documents, the 3rd graders are learning how to use screencasting so that learning is broken down on an individual level, 4th graders are learning how to type correctly, and 5th grade just finished a project in where they write about their 5th grade experience so far! 5th grade has also finished creating "word clouds" in which the student may shape words from a document into various shapes. I was a bit nervous in doing this because last year, it seemed a bit challenging to the students. However, this year, the kids are really enjoying it! It's so awesome to see students helping other students to achieve a goal! I have also started a Technology Club in which select students are able to stay after school one day a week and work on projects. Such projects include creating a Voki, creating a tour of the school on the iPad and creating cartoons! I hope everyone has a rested Thanksgiving Break!

  • Starting off Strong

Posted by Andres Chavez at 9/19/2012 9:30:00 PM
Here we are staring off another great year! These first three years of school have been great! Although we have not gotten into the "meat" of the curriculum, students are still having a wonderful time exploring how to submit assignments online. I constantly tell them that one day they may be submitting all of their work online! I am also excited for my 4th and 5th grade classes this year. I am going to be using a new tool called "screencasting" in which they will be able to follow along with pre-recorded videos of things that I do. This will ultimately help the student because it will be self-paced and can be repeated as many times as needed. I cannot wait to get the ball rolling with this! I am looking forward to seeing how the students will utilize this new tool!

  • The Final Stretch

Posted by Andres Chavez at 3/29/2012 6:00:00 PM
Well half of the STAAR test has come and gone! I am now in what I consider to be in "the final stretch" of the year. I really enjoy this time of year when it comes to my Technology Classes. 4th and 5th graders will be learning the basics of presentation tools, 3rd graders are winding up learning how to use spreadsheets, and 1st and 2nd graders will be learning how to create visual maps.

It is so fun to have conversations about technology with students. If someone sees me in the hallway, they are not hesitant to tell me about the new device they bought or the latest app they have downloaded. One of the highlights of today was when a 4th grader told me that he and his mother were working on a document. He had told me that both of them spent hours trying to put a document together and he was able to help his mother out because he learned what to do in Technology Class. That made my day! It is such a good feeling knowing that students apply this information outside of the classroom!

  • "This Was the Coolest Lesson I Have Ever Done!"-5th Grade Student

Posted by Andres Chavez at 1/5/2012 9:10:00 PM
This school year is really flying by! It seems like just yesterday I was going over the rules and procedures of the classroom. I have been telling all my classes that we are already halfway done with the school year and that we are going to learn a lot in the next few weeks. I have really been enjoying my 5th grade class! I tried something new in which they have to watch a video of me creating an spreadsheet. It has my voice and it goes step by step. The interesting thing is that it is completely self paced! Majority of the students really enjoyed the first project and are looking forward to more! Words could not describe the feeling that I had when one of the 5th grade students told me that, "...this was the coolest assignment I have ever done!"

  • New School / New Excitement!

Posted by Andres Chavez at 10/12/2011 9:45:00 PM

     Hello Gators!

I am proud to say that I am your child's Technology Teacher this year! We have gotten off to a fast start this year but the students have already learned so much in a short amount of time! Right now, the 4th Graders are learning how to type properly (home row, middle row, upper row) and it is a blast to see them transitioning from "chicken typing" to typing the correct way! The 1st and 2nd graders are currently about the different parts of the computer by viewing interactive videos from learning.com (I encourage them to practice at home.) My 3rd and 5th graders are currently laying the foundation for learning how to type documents. There is something new always going on in the Computer Lab and I really enjoy seeing a kid when he or she catches the "spark" of how awesome technology can be!

  • New Beginnings

Posted by Andres Chavez at 8/18/2011 10:00:00 PM

Wow, this summer has really flown by fast! Words cannot describe how excited I am about starting a new year at a new school! During the summer, I went to some pretty awesome trainings about how to integrate technology into the classroom. I cannot wait to share those ideas with the students! We are going to start something new this year called "Paper Slide Videos" in which each student will draw a picture about a given theme in technology. We will then run each picture in front of a video camera and make a movie out of it. I cannot wait to share those with you!

Looking forward to a great year!

Wow! The year is almost up! Time sure does fly! Classes have been going really great lately! I went to a Technology Conference a couple of months ago and have so many "tools" that I enjoy using in the classroom! There is no greater feeling then when a student is like "Ohh, THAT'S how you do that!"

Well, we have completed about a month of school and the Technology Class at SE is off to a great start! Students are excited to come to class and are actively participating in lessons! It is exciting to see how students absorb technology and how many of them just have a natural enjoyment for computers in general.
